reCONNECT Quilt Project, 2013 - 2017

the reCONNECT Quilt was a biennial socially engaged project installed at art fairs for community interaction of considering the simple or profound ways that connects us as human beings. A simple but visually impactful large-scale work that is created by everyone who participates, Each quilt, comprising of 36 color squares, makes up a rainbow quilt of hands in the color of the LGBTQ flag as a symbol of queer and QTBIPOC solidarity. Active 2013 - 2017.
Originally commissioned by ArtforProgress in 2013 and installed in Solar 1 Park, NYC - the reCONNECT Quilt Project was conceived as a two-day interactive installation, where everyone selected a 12 x 12 color square of their choice, traced their hand on their square, and then expressesed in words or drawings how WE are all Connected.
Each affirmation they tied into the whole made the quilt stronger - a colourful metaphorical hand-holding flag of positive bonds.
The project was also installed at Figment Festival on Governor’s Island, New York, 2015, and at the Fresh Paint Festival, Washington, 2017.

Project History
The Inaugural presentation of the reCONNECT Quilt project in 2013 was installed as part of the Artists4Equality festival, sponsored by Art For Progress. The organization’s second annual music and arts festival was held at Solar One Park, located in Manhattan, New York City, on the East River at 23rd Street. Featuring live bands, DJ’s, performance and art installations during NYC’s PrideWeekend.
The second presentation took place at 2015 Figment Festival NYC on Governor’s Island, New York with funding support from Figment + New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA).
Most recently the project was erected at the 2017 Fresh Paint Arts Festival at Everett Marina, Washington, with sponsored support from Schack Art Center.
